2009 BlueScope Steel Glenn Murcutt Student Prize - $8000 first prize

Online entries will open on April 30, and all entries must be received by no later than 5pm July 10 2009

Introduction  The Bluescope Steel Glenn Murcutt Student Prize was established in 2005 to recognise outstanding architectural student work which demonstrates excellence in response to place, technology and Australian culture.

The prize is presented every second year at the AustralianInstitute ofArchitects National Architecture Awards.

Prize winning and short listed designs are exhibited on the Australian Institute of Architects and SONA websites.The Australian Institute of Architects acknowledges the generous support of Bluescope Steel as sponsor of the prize and Glenn Murcutt as patron.

Who can enter?
(Eligibility)

The 2009 Bluescope Steel Glenn Murcutt Student Prize is open to:

Students who have completed an AustralianInstitute ofArchitects /SONA recognised Australian architecture course in 2007; and

Undergraduate students enrolled in an Australian Institute of Architects /SONA recognised Australian architecture course during 2008.

For the purposes of the prize, students at Australian Architecture schools represented on the Australian Institute of Architects/SONA national committee are considered eligible to enter this competition.

Design work submitted by students is to have been undertaken within the Australian architecture course in either 2007 or 2008.

Schools/programs of Architecture may not submit work on behalf of a student. Only one entry per person may be submitted. Group entries are not permitted.

Work that was short listed for the 2008 Australian Institute of Architects & COLORBOND® steel Student Biennale is not eligible.

Work short listed for the 2009 Bluescope Steel Glenn Murcutt Student Prize will be ineligible for entry into the 2010 Australian Institute of Architects Student Biennale.

Australian Institute of Architects/SONA members who are shortlisted for the 2009 Bluescope Steel Glenn Murcutt Student Prize will be unable to participate in the electronic voting process open to SONA members.

What do I enter?
(Submission format)

Work must be submitted digitally through this website. We are unable to accept any hard copies.

The entry system will be available from April 30 2009 until 5pm Friday July 10 2009. Submissions cannot be accepted outside these dates.

To enter the prize you will need to supply the following:

  • Name, Architecture school/program & contact details
  • Year & level of course in which the project was completed (eg 2007/Yr 3)
  • Up to 12 scanned or digital images of the project in RGB JPG format, 800x600 pixels @ 72dpi resolution. Each image is limited to 200kb in size and MUST conform to these standards
  • A written statement (max 150 words) describing how the project demonstrates excellence in response to place
  • A written statement (max 150 words) describing how the project demonstrates excellence in response to technology
  • A written statement (max 150 words) describing how the project demonstrates excellence in response to Australian culture

 

The digital entries will be reviewed by a selection panel in each state/territory who will select a finalist from each school.

Finalists will be asked to supply additional components on CD including:

 

Up to 12 x A4 PDF files with graphics in full colour @ 300dpi resolution. Allow 3mm of extra bleed for trimming and layout for presentation in an A4 portfolio.

How do I win?
(Selection procedure)

Once the entry deadline has closed, the following process will determine the final winner of the prize.

Selection Panels
First, selection panels in each state/territory will select one finalist from each school. These selection panels will consist of:

  • The heads of participating schools (or nominees) for the state/territory
  • An Australian Institute of Architects/SONA representative from the state/territory
  • An Australian Institute of Architects National Education Committee (NEC) member or NEC nominee

     The finalists will be placed in an online gallery before being reviewed by a national jury.

    National Jury
    A national jury will then select the final prize winner from the finalists. This jury will consist of:

    • Glenn Murcutt or his nominee
    • The Australian Institute of Architects National President or nominee  
    • The SONA National President or nominee

    Selection Criteria
    The selection criteria used by the jury shall include, but are not limited to the following:

Degree of complexity of the program

  • Sensitivity and communication of response to place and environment
  • Practicality of approach to technology and feasibility of construction demonstrating an appreciation of buildability, structure and services requirements
  • Sensitivity of response and relevance to Australian culture

    The national jury will provide comment upon each winning or short listed entry giving the reasons for its decision.

    The written report of the national jury will be published online along with the announcement of the prize winner. The decision of the jury is final.

    The Bluescope Steel Glenn Murcutt Prize provides a certificate to the wining entry...along with a cash prize of $8,000!

    The winner will also be sponsored to attend the 2009 Australian Institute of Architects National Architecture Awards ceremony.

    Closing Dates
    Submissions for the 2009 Bluescope Steel Glenn Murcutt Student Prize must be submitted to the website no later than 5pm, Friday July 10 2009.

    Electronic Voting Competition
    Once the 16 finalists have been chosen all Institute and SONA members are invited to vote for their preferred winner of the prize through an Electronic Voting Competition.

    The Electronic Voting Competition will be open from 10-20 August. During this time each Institute/SONA member may cast a single vote for their preferred winner of the prize.

    The finalist who receives the most votes will be awarded a cash prize of $1000 and a certificate from SONA. The SONA president will (where possible) advocate this person during the final national jury selection process.

    All Institute/SONA members who participate in the electronic voting competition are eligible to win a cash prize of $1000. The winner of this prize will be randomly selected by a computer system.
